KCTCS Guidelines on the Use of Artificial Intelligence for Graphic Design

Artificial intelligence (AI) tools are becoming increasingly common in the creation of visual materials such as flyers, social media graphics, digital ads, and other promotional items. While these tools can support creativity and efficiency, all communications representing KCTCS and its colleges must remain consistent with the official KCTCS brand standards.

These guidelines provide expectations for the appropriate use of AI in the creation of graphic design materials to ensure all internal and external communications maintain brand integrity, accessibility, and professional quality.

Guiding Principles

AI tools may be used to assist with ideation, drafting content, or generating preliminary design concepts. However, AI-generated materials must still meet all established KCTCS brand standards and communication guidelines.

Brand consistency across all colleges strengthens recognition, credibility, and trust with students, partners, and the public.

Use of AI for Graphic Design

AI tools may be used for:

  • Brainstorming visual concepts
  • Drafting layouts or initial creative ideas
  • Generating inspiration for campaigns
  • Assisting marketing teams in the design process

AI tools should not be used to produce final marketing or promotional materials without review by the appropriate college or system marketing team.

Required Brand Compliance

All materials representing KCTCS or any KCTCS college must comply with:

  • Official KCTCS brand guidelines
  • Approved fonts, colors, and logos
  • Proper and approved use of the Pathfinder mascot
  • Accessibility standards
  • Messaging and tone guidelines

AI-generated graphics often produce imagery, fonts, logos, mascots, or layouts that do not align with KCTCS brand standards and should be adjusted accordingly before publication.

Marketing Review Requirement

College and system office marketing departments may require review of graphic design materials intended for internal or external audiences, including flyers, advertisements, social media graphics, event promotions, or recruitment materials, prior to distribution.

This ensures:

  • Brand alignment
  • Accuracy of information
  • Accessibility compliance
  • Proper use of the KCTCS logo and Pathfinder mascot
  • Visual consistency across the KCTCS system

Prohibited Uses

The following uses of AI-generated design are not permitted without marketing review and approval:

  • Use of unapproved or altered KCTCS logos
  • AI-generated versions or altered depictions of the Pathfinder mascot that are not part of the official brand assets
  • Graphics that mimic or recreate official branding without following brand standards
  • AI-generated promotional materials distributed publicly without marketing review and approval
  • Visuals that conflict with established institutional messaging or visual identity

Best Practice

Departments and offices are encouraged to collaborate with their college marketing teams early in the design process. Marketing teams can help refine AI-assisted ideas and ensure materials reflect the quality and professionalism of the KCTCS brand.
