Culinary Arts

This guide records how articulated postsecondary credit from a high school culinary arts career and technical education (CTE) program of study will be accepted at the colleges of the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS)[1].

Credit for Prior Learning Request

COLLEGE CREDIT REQUIREMENTS

To earn KCTCS credit for culinary arts, a student must have accomplished the following:

  1. Completed their high school culinary arts program with a grade of B or higher
  2. Passed the Culinary and Food Services end of program assessment or the Culinary Arts AAFCS Pre-PAC Assessment;
  3. Submitted the necessary documentation, signed by a school personnel, indicating all requirements have been met (see next page of this document for signature page)
  4. Applied to a KCTCS college and enrolled within five years of graduating high school
  5. Met with the culinary arts program coordinator (or their designee) at their home KCTCS college.

Upon successful completion of the requirements above, a student will be eligible to receive college credit for the following courses:

CUL 100 Introduction to Culinary Arts (2 credit hours) and

CUL 230 Basic Nutrition (3 credit hours)

Students who do not complete three credit hours in an applicable postsecondary program at the KCTCS college within five years of the last course completed at the secondary institution may be required to take a special examination or to repeat the course if there has been significant change in related technology.

CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING

In addition, a student who has passed and received ServSafe Manager certification or certification for Food Protection Manager from an American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-accredited food safety program (see list of accredited programs here) within the last five years, will receive additional credit for:

CUL 125 Sanitation and Safety (2 credit hours)


This agreement will be in effect until changes are made to the KCTCS curriculum, the third-party assessment and/or the end of program assessment. This is valid for students who graduate high school in 2022 and until the criteria for this CT2KCTCS guide are changed.
