Ready to Work at Henderson Community College Helps Parents Thrive
"Just do it! This is not simply a program – it is a once in a lifetime opportunity!" - Current Henderson Community College, and former Ready to Work participant, Janice
The Ready to Work (RTW) program is designed to assist low-income parents achieve their educational goals by supporting them as they balance family, work and school.
Henderson Community College (HCC) RTW client Janice Fenwick started the program in April 2018. Thanks to the skills and experience she gained through the RTW program, she recently exited the program after applying for, and receiving, a full-time position with a local employer. Janice is on track to graduate with her associate degree in the spring of 2024
We recently caught up with Janice to get her perspective on her participation in the
RTW program at HCC.
What brought you to HCC?
Life presented me with unexpected circumstances that changed the path I had anticipated for myself. Despite that, I knew it was important to complete my associate degree to get the better paying career my family and I are worthy of. As a student with nontraditional needs, it was essential to choose a college with a program that supported my position and fostered my success. I found that at HCC.
How did the Ready to Work (RTW) program benefit you during your academic journey?
Without the RTW program, I could not have dreamed of even starting this journey. The RTW coordinator helped me every step of the way by reducing my anxieties and creating a workable pathway specifically for me and my situation. The coordinator ensured I had all the basics I needed such as a working laptop, food and toiletries from the Care Center on campus, plus a work placement designed for my specific interests.
What would you say to those on the Kentucky Transitional Assistance Program (KTAP) who are considering Ready to Work and continuing their education?
Just do it! This is not simply a program – it is a once in a lifetime opportunity!
I discovered that my circumstances demanded education, and I knew I deserved this
not only for myself, but also for my children and our future. With the support of
KTAP, RTW and Henderson Community College, success is achievable!
