SKYCTC graduate soars into aviation career debt-free

maryFor Mary Schalk, Southcentral Community and Technical College provided a pathway to pursue her goals, turn lifelong ambitions into reality and explore multiple career interests. Combining a future in aviation with a degree in marketing, Mary graduated from college debt-free and is encouraging others not to overlook the possibilities a community college education can provide.

Becoming a licensed pilot by the age of 20, SKYCTC’s academic flexibility made it possible for Mary to earn her credentials while working. Through a combination of scholarships, including the SKYCTC Merit Scholarship and Work Ready Kentucky Scholarship, Mary earned her degree and the credentials she needed to fly without the burden of student loans.

“Graduating without student debt has lifted a huge weight off me,” Mary said. “If anyone has experienced flight lessons, they understand how costly it is. When I completed this with no student debt, I felt certain that this degree is going to do nothing but push me higher.”

Today, Mary balances her career as a commercial pilot with her work as a marketing director for multiple small businesses, including MCS Lawn Care and Grey Rock Construction, while also flying banners for Master Wings Aviation. Recently, she passed her final two certifications for commercial flying and is currently hard at work accumulating flight hours to accomplish her next goal: flying jets for a charter company.

“No one should ever settle for one thing if you love it all,” Mary said. “KCTCS gives opportunities to explore options and makes it possible to have more than one interest. There are so many opportunities at a community and technical college. It is the perfect place to get started and have a smooth transition from high school. KCTCS lets you explore opportunities without breaking the bank and helps you chase what you're passionate about and make it happen.”
