From SKYCTC to Harvard: Dual credit opens doors for Kentucky student

braydenBrayden Johnson knew from a young age that he wanted to become a doctor. Through dual credit courses at Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College (SKYCTC), he graduated from high school with an associate degree and an acceptance letter from Harvard University.

Brayden credits his early college experience through the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) with preparing him for the academic rigor of Harvard and giving him the confidence to pursue his ambitions.

“Earning my associate degree in high school represented a commitment to pushing myself beyond my academic environment,” Brayden said. “Beyond the credits I earned, KCTCS gave me the confidence to enter Harvard knowing I was capable of succeeding in a demanding environment.”

Raised in a family of educators, Brayden developed a strong appreciation for education early in life, crediting his parents with instilling the values and academic drive that continue to shape his ambitions.

With plans to study psychology and neuroscience, Brayden is focused on his future as a physician and establishing a medical practice in a rural community, where he plans to help address barriers to health care in underserved areas.

For students considering a community college education, Brayden hopes his journey demonstrates that financial circumstances and access to resources do not have to define their futures.

“Rather than focusing on what I didn’t have access to, I committed myself to making the most out of every opportunity available to me,” Brayden said. “I hope my journey, from earning an associate degree at SKYCTC to now attending Harvard, can serve as evidence that you can accomplish far more than what you, or those around you, may initially believe.”
