Rules of the Senate

1.1 Definition

Credit for Prior Learning (CPL) is the assessment and awarding of KCTCS credit for college-level learning acquired through non-collegiate activities, including work, military service, training, and other means. Credit is evaluated through nationally standardized external examinations, high school articulation, Special Technical Education Proficiency (STEP) or challenge exams for specific courses at individual institutions, evaluation of workplace learning and alternative educational experiences and/or military training and experience through the American Council on Education (ACE), recognition of industry-recognized or third-party credentials and certifications, Prior Learning Portfolios, and Local Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). Credit for prior learning is not awarded for experience, but rather for college-level learning which entails knowledge, skills, and competencies that students have obtained because of their prior learning experiences. Priority should be placed on credit for prior learning that applies directly to a student’s program of study and accelerates them to credential completion.
