3.36 Career and Life Skills Program

3.36.1 System Guidelines (None)

3.36.2 College Guidelines

  • 3.36.2.1 Owensboro Community and Technical College
    • Enrollment in the Career and Life Skills Program may be limited due to the availability of faculty, staff, and community placements.
    • Technical Standards
      • Students completing a secondary program of study, particularly those who have had to overcome challenges to their educational success, can benefit from continuing their studies at the postsecondary level even if they are unsure of their career direction. The Career and Life Skills certificate is designed to improve employability through college-level coursework that includes life-long learning skills, digital literacy, and career exploration, as well as essential workplace skills through experiential learning opportunities. The certificate, using an individualized, person-centered planning approach, provides the flexibility to tailor the program of study based on the student’s needs and interests. This allows the student to explore one or more introductory technical courses as a part of the certificate while developing the social skills and the general workforce readiness critical to entry-level employment and success.
    • Admission to the Program
      • Selection of students for the Career and Life Skills program will be made by the President of the College or President’s designee after considering the recommendations of the Admissions Committee, which is to be appointed for the purpose of admission and making initial suggestions for the supports needed for student success in the program. Membership on this committee shall be as follows:
        1. Faculty or staff member appointed by the Chief Academic Officer
        2. Faculty or staff member appointed by the Chief Student Affairs Officer
        3. Disabilities Services staff member
        4. Staff member involved in student support services programs (e.g., Ready to Work, TRiO, Pre-Employment Transition Services, success coaches)
        5. Additional member appointed by the Chief Student Affairs Officer (may or may not be a college employee)
      • In order to be considered for admission to the Career and Life Skills program, applicants must submit the following:
        1. KCTCS application for the college
        2. High school transcript
        3. An application for the certificate program
        4. Recommendation from an educator, support services provider, or advocate explaining their perspective on the benefit of the Career and Life Skills program for the applicant, including any suggested supports needed for the student’s success
      • KCTCS Assessment and Placement policies apply, although they may be waived by the Chief Academic Officer based on the recommendation of the Admissions Committee. The documentation of each waiver will be maintained by the Office of Academic Affairs at the college with notification provided to the KCTCS Chancellor’s office as required by KCTCS Administrative Policy 4.13.3.2F.
      • Students must maintain the standards of Satisfactory Academic Progress, as determined by the college’s Financial Aid Office, to remain enrolled in the program. If a student fails to meet the standards, their program of study will be changed to non-credential seeking, undecided, or a program the student is qualified to enter.
