3.7.2.8 Henderson Community College

The system guidelines will be followed except that:

Regular Admission Requirements

Applicants must complete an application for each admission cycle of which they are interested in applying. Contact the Nursing Administrative Assistant for an application packet.

Applicants must submit the following documents to the college admissions office:

  1. Current application to the college.
  2. “Official” results of the ACT, TEAS, and/or HESI A2 Examinations (Must be taken within the past 5 years of applying to the nursing program.) Note: A student is allowed to a maximum of three attempts on the TEAS and HESI A2 Examinations. A student must wait a minimum of six weeks between testing attempts.
  3. “Official” transcripts of all post-high school education.
  4. “Official” high school transcripts (if applicable).

Prior to entry into NSG 101, students must have completed BIO 137 (earning a C or better), PSY 110, ENG 101, and Quantitative Reasoning course at AA/AS Level (earning a C or better). Students must also be certified in an approved CPR course (American Heart Association BLS Provider) and must have completed NAA 100 or its equivalency within the past 5 years or have an active SRNA certification by the first day of their entry or re-entry into the NSG 101 course.

Pre-requisites for the LPN to AND Bridge Program: BIO 137 (earning a C or better), BIO 139 (earning a C or better), PSY 110, ENG 101, and Quantitative Reasoning Course at AA/AS Level (earning a C or better), and an unrestricted, current LPN license.

This nursing admission point scale is designed to objectively evaluate applicants for the Associate Degree Nursing Program. Admission is based on this structured point system. Admission is also limited to available seats. This is a selective admissions process and individuals are not guaranteed a seat. Applicants with the highest total points will be admitted to the program.

Nursing Admission Point Scale Calculation: ACT OR TEAS OR HESI A2 examination points (taken within the past 5 years will be calculated based on the highest point total if more than one exam has been taken) + GPA points + points from any of the following classes taken: BIO 137, BIO 139, BIO 225, MAT 150 + 5 points for successful completion of 12 graded (non-developmental) college credit hours = total points.

**In the event of a tie in total points, the applicants’ cumulative GPA will be rank ordered to determine admission to the ADN program.

A student cannot receive points for both high school GPA and college GPA. A student will only receive points for their high school GPS if they do not have 12 hours of college credit. *Students with cumulative high school or college GPA less than 2.5 are ineligible to apply for the nursing program.

Students with an unencumbered, active Practical Nurse license will be given 5 additional points.

Students may be offered a seat in a nursing class contingent on completion of requirements (for example, pre-requisite courses as determined by the curriculum). Should a student fail to complete the predetermined requirements, the offered seat will be withdrawn.

In order to qualify for the Henderson Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program, a student must have an academic record free of disciplinary action. Students with disciplinary violations in any college within the KCTCS system or who have transcripts from other colleges indicating conduct violations will be considered ineligible for the program.

The Nursing Admissions Committee reserves the right to require an interview of any applicant to the Henderson Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program.

If a student has been unsuccessful (earned a D, E, F, or W) in any nursing course in any nursing program, the student will be required to comply with the following additional standards:

  • If the student attended Henderson Community College, the student will be required to submit two letters of support from nursing faculty members, unless the student is unable to obtain endorsement due to retirement or other separation of employment. The student will then be required to submit an essay detailing the circumstances of the student’s previous unsuccessful attempt, changes the student has made, and steps the student will make to ensure success in the future. The student may also be required to interview with members of the Nursing Admissions Committee.
  • Students who have been unsuccessful (earned a D, E, F, or W) in any nursing course in any nursing program will receive a 5-point deduction for each unsuccessful attempt.

ARTICULATION AND TRANSFER GUIDELINES FOR LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSES TO ASSOCIATE DEGREE NURSING PROGRAM

The articulation and transfer plan applies only to those licensed practical nurses who have applied for admission into the Henderson Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program in accordance with the established policies and requirements.

  1. The applicant must have a current unencumbered practical nursing license in the state of KY, IN, or a Licensure Compact State.
  2. Licensed Practical/Vocational Nurses who graduated more than three (3) years prior to admission shall provide verification of current employment. Current employment is defined as one (1) full year full-time employment as an LPN/LVN within the last three years. The employment in nursing shall be defined as patient/client contact and shall be verified by the employing agency/agencies.
  3. The applicant must have met the same requirements as students who are entering the associate degree nursing program in NSG 101:
    1. Quantitative reasoning course at AA/AS Level with a “C” or higher;
    2. BIO 137 & *139 with “C” or higher;
    3. PSY 110 & ENG 101;
    4. ACT OR TEAS OR HESI A2 (within the past 5 years of applying);
    5. Have earned a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher;
    6. Current American Heart Association BLS certification for CPR (if accepted);
    7. Criminal Background checks and drug screens (if accepted); and
    8. Immunizations in accordance with requirements of NSG 101 students (if accepted).
  4. The Official Student Articulation Transcript shall be completed and reviewed by the Nursing Program Director and Registrar. The Articulation Transcript shall include verification of program completion date and the date of the original license.
  5. The applicant will be ranked with the other NSG 101 students and if approved by the Nursing Admissions Committee may be allowed admission to NSG 219/NSG 212 provided there is adequate space in the classroom and clinical. ** Space will be determined by the number of clinical faculty available to teach in the NSG 219/NSG 212 course at a ratio in compliance with KBN standards. Students who are asking for readmission to the NSG 219 will have preference for the available space.
  6. In the event of a nursing curriculum revision, the articulation requirements will also be amended.
  7. After a student is ranked and accepted for articulation into NSG 219/NSG 212 the student may audit NSG 101 the semester immediately prior to entering their second semester of the nursing program.

    * BIO 139 is taken concurrently with NSG 101 and completed prior to admission to NSG 219/NSG 212. LPN’s asking for articulation must have completed this course before articulation can be granted.
